Top Choice: Silvertip Resort, Canmore Alberta

10/10

Why it's Spectacular

With plenty of courses in the greater Banff area it is hard to pick a "best" but after playing Silvertip the decision becomes easier. It is without question the most interesting blend of scenery, quality conditions, course design, and challenge. In fact, there really isn't hole that isn't stunning. The elevation changes keep you on your toes, and while good club selection and target golf are a must, the variable perspectives of each hole are sure to leave you in awe.

As one who fancies themselves as having refined taste when it comes to golf courses, Silvertip can easily find it's way into a Top-10, or arguably even a Top-5 in the entire world.

Banff Springs Golf

Fairmont Banff Springs

Stanley Thompson

Pros: One of the most scenic golf experiences possible, this is an absolute treat for any golf enthusiast. Every hole is surrounded my breathtaking mountains, flowing rivers and the sprawling Fairmont Hotel. Elevation changes, interesting shots, and sweeping views make every second of this experience one to remember.

Cons: In some ways the course design may feel a bit dated, but the wow-factor of the landscape and stunning views easily makes you forget about that and forces you to enjoy every second of your time.

9.9/10

Stewart Creek Golf

Stewart Creek

--

Pros: Maybe the nicest-kept course in the greater Banff area, Stewart Creek is an avid golf-lovers dream come true. While the views may fall slightly behind those of Silvertip and Banff Springs, the course is the definition of pristine and the dramatic contrast of bright green fairways against the rich blues, purples, and greys of the jagged mountain backdrop is a sight to behold.

Cons: It is actually harder to find something wrong with this course than even the higher rated ones. It ultimately just comes down to "wow-factor" versus total quality. If the latter, Stewart Creek could easily rank #1!

Score:

9.7/10

Kananaskis Golf Mt. Kidd

Kananaskis Country Golf

Mt. Kidd

Pros: Relative to it's slightly more famous counterparts, Mt. Kidd is a bit of a sleeper but from the second you approach the clubhouse this will change. The views of the mountain trapped valley provide some of the most stunning panoramic views of any course not only in Alberta, but arguable the world. Additionally, the course is expertly maintained making it clear why this is a locals favorite and quickly gets booked up for the entire summer months.

Cons: Honestly, none. Not quite as fancy, known, or coveted as some of the others in the area and yet could easily creep into the Top 10 of even a discerning golf enthusiast!

Score:

9.6/10

Kananaskis Golf Mt. Lorrette

Kananaskis Country Golf

Mt Lorette

Pros: Perhaps a half-notch less scenic than Mt Kidd, Lorette still holds its own against any competition. The course winds over and through a variety of water features including glacial lakes, and free-flowing rivers making it a good test of target golf. There are still plenty of views and the course is maintained to perfection. It would feel disingenuous to provide any critique as it's still an absolute treat.

Cons: With a few less elevation changes and thus a bit less scenery than Mt Kidd it might make sense that Lorette plays second fiddle but the margin is narrow and the course is still one that we'd recommend over many other more known courses throughout the world.
